Description

Although the history of the word “smock” is somewhat nebulous, it’s believed that it originated during the Elizabethan era and was used to describe linen shirts worn as undergarments.

The use of smocks as work clothing gradually transitioned from being worn at night to during the day sometime in the nineteenth century. They were commonly worn by “country folk” during the day, but fell out of fashion around Victorian times.

Varying in appearance, fabric, length, and colour, it was the mid and southern farming communities of England that popularised the smocks use. Cut as squares so that no paper pattern was required – therefore limiting fabric wastage –, pleating the fabric in a consistent manner and then embroidering it was an efficient way of reducing the width of the garment, whilst maintaining freedom of movement when being worn. Whilst often looking quite decorative, it was important that these smocks were functional too – ease of movement was essential, and the shirt itself had to be robust enough to withstand the toil of hard physical labor.

Whilst the smock was originally derived from peasant work clothing, it wasn’t until the twentieth century that its usage developed further and eventually came to form an essential part of military kit.

Early explorers to Antarctica used smocks manufactured by brands such as Burberry. These garments were made from tougher fabrics, such as cotton gabardine, which provided wind and weather protection. They were worn by figures like Sir Ernest Shackleton and Roald Amundsen in some of the harshest conditions on Earth. This design template was later adapted for military clothing and outdoor gear

Material

WAXED CANVAS

Centuries ago, sailors noticed their sails caught better wind when wet. But wet sails are heavy sails—so, resourceful Scottish sailors in the mid-19th century discovered they could cure the sail fabric. This allowed the fabric to receive water on the surface, but not soak in.

These pioneers of waxed canvas applied linseed oil to their sailcloth, and eventually to their capes (the precursor to the fisherman’s slicker), to waterproof the fabric. Interestingly, one downside to the linseed oil was it yellowed as it aged – which is why to this day, fisherman’s slickers are traditionally yellow.

In the 1930s, the application of linseed oil was replaced with a new process: rather than applying linseed oil to the surface of the canvas, the cotton cloth was impregnated with paraffin wax. This produced a waxed canvas that remained highly water resistant, but more breathable and less stiff (and eliminated the problem of yellowing).
