This Buzz Rickson’s M-51 is an updated version of the M-48 pullover parka that had evolved since World War Ⅱ. To protect the U.S. Forces from this unprecedented cold battlefield, a layer system was employed so that the parka could be worn over ordinary equipment. While the shell of the initial model was made of thick cotton satin, it was changed to oxford cotton nylon from the 1952. Buzz Rickson’s M-51 is impressive not only due to it’s superlative craftsmanship but also due to specially curated, authentic materials.
Description
First issued by the United States Armed Forces for the Korean War, the M-51 has since transcended its military purposes to become a symbol of peace and love amongst the youth of America. Its unquestionable iconic status is cemented by classic design and superb functionality. The outer shell is a densely woven 100% cotton which is durable and soft all at once. The design features the buttoned inner which are used to attach a liner jacket, and the iconic fish tail back which has long been an influential symbol of counter culture. The pocket bags have been crafted using a lightweight wool which are superb for warming the hands, and the zipper is a vintage reproduction of the famous ‘Crown’ zips which have an enviable reputation for durability. All the binding has been completed in 100% cotton tape, there won’t be any plastics to be found here. The fabric for this military icon has been woven on vintage looms and put together using vintage sewing machines. This really is just about as close as you can get to the real thing.
